704. Hero Colonial Warrior Viper Pilot helmet from Battlestar Galactica. (ABC-TV, 1978-1979) This signature Colonial Viper Pilot helmet was used in the original hit television series Battlestar Galactica. The gold and black colored helmet was custom made for use on the series and is constructed of fiberglass with a gold painted flying bird device on the top and two rows of interior light bars inside (no longer functional). While additional background Viper Pilot helmets were used on the show, this is one of only four extremely rare "light up" models that were used interchangeably in cockpit and close up scenes by all the principle Colonial Viper Pilot principle characters including "Starbuck", "Apollo", and "Boomer" (portrayed by Dirk Benedict, Richard Hatch, and Herb Jefferson Jr., respectively). The interior of the helmet has "# 1" handwritten in red ink in two places indicating its use as a principle "Hero" helmet used on the production. Battlestar Galactica won two Emmys in 1979 for Outstanding Costume Design for a Series and Outstanding Individual Achievement - Creative Technical Craft. The series was also nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction for a Series the same year. The helmet is in good screen-used condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
