Igbo male and female couple carved in wood and painted, Nigeria. Family members or small villages kept similar figures in the home or public space to maintain a relationship with deceased relatives, offering prayers and sacrifices tocommemorate the dead. The white colouring in the Igbo / Ibo culture is representative of spirits, and characteristic features of these figures include outstretched, upright palms, straight frontal posture and symmetry. The elaborateheaddress is also representative of strength, and an ability to "fight with the head" to signify perseverance. Details showing scarification likely also relays the status of the individual represented.
