From central coastal region of Liberia, with strong influences from neighbouring Dan and Kpelle peoples. Wood sculptures of women among the Dan are typically commissioned by wealthy men to honour an esteemed wife, referred to us "Lu me".These figures typically represent living women rather than deceased ancestors, and are intended as a portrait. The baby on her back may be representative of fertility or continuity in the family lineage. This particular female showsscarification on her forehead and torso, and her prominent coiffure is indicative of high social status.
