Henry Hindley, York, a George III mahogany 'Chinese Chippendale' longcase clock, the case very similar to a design in Chippendale's Director, the pagoda top hood with 12inch arched signed silvered one-piece dial, 4 pillar movement, the tapering trunk with full length door upon a stepped moulded front plinth, 271cm high
Provenance: Mawley Hall, Shropshire Literature: The case design published as plate CXXXVI in the 1754 and 1755 editions of Chippendale's Director. Henry Hindley (1701-1771), a fine and ingenious clockmaker, also created the world’s first telescope powered by a precision clock movement, enabling the telescope to remain fixed on its subject without constant adjustment because of the earth’s rotation (Collection Science Museum, London).
