Vintage Tumbuan / Tambanum ceremonial mask from New Guinea. Features an elongated facial form decorated with polychrome decoration. A Tumbuan mask would have been worn during all ceremonial dances particularly that preceding the initiation of young men. In earlier times these would have been part of preparations for head hunting expedition and other secret initiation rites. Often worn by men who would run through the village and scare women and children that could not participate in the ceremonies. Good overall condition with age related wear and losses.
