One of two editions of this important account of the second French circumnavigation (after Bougainville) to be published 1797-1800 - the other had the text in three-volume quarto, both had the same atlas. The expedition was commanded by Captain Etienne Marchand, on a fur-trading mission to the northwest coast of North America. The ship rounded Cape Horn, then touched at the Marquesas and Hawaii before proceeding the Norfolk Sound, the Queen Charlotte Islands, Nootka Sound, etc. Lada-Mocarski states that "This is a very important and authoritative work for the history of the Northwest Coast."
