IWAO AKIYAMA (1921-2014) was a Japanese printing maker working in the sosaku-hanga style, known for his images of women, owls, cats, and other animals. He studied drawing under the direction of a Buddhist monk during his childhood. He originally pursued oil painting, however, Akiyama changed his focus to woodblock printing after meeting Shinko Munakata, under whom he studied from 1959 until 1965. Examples of his work are currently held in the British Museum, National Gallery of Victoria, National Museum of Scotland, and the Cincinnati Art Museum among others.
