"I shudder to think what you will think of me but a drastic job has got to bring me to Scotland for May 6th - 8th and ...I can't play at Wimbledon on 7th..." The rest is difficult to read, but ends yrs ever Bernard Darwin. The man Darwin calls "Chief Joker" was Harold Gillies - later Sir Harold of plastic surgery fame. On one occasion he reportedly had the whale of St. Andrews out, at night, to watch a two hole match (1st and 18th) played by the light of car headlamps - supposedly for a visiting "Eastern Prince" (who was rumored to be Darwin in disguise).
