There are three royal mask forms among the Kuba from Congo, of which the Bwoom is one of the oldest; they have existed since at least the seventeenth century and are associated with the narration of Kuba society's foundation. The Bwoom masquerader dance is proud and aggressive in style, matching the striking nature of the mask. This example is embellished with cowrie shells, beads, seedpods, copper sheeting, goatskin, and hair. Provenance: Old Belgian collection. H=34cm
