Description
Songye, Democratic Republic of Congo. The Songye power figures are named Nkisi and have a protective role. The bigger ones like this are commissioned by the Nganga spiritualist (nganga) for the protection and well-being of the village habitants. Smaller Nkishi are for the private use of an individual, customized to his or her personal needs. AGE: End XIXth, early XXth. Provenance: French collection, & Jan Kusters, Netherland. H=40 cm
Condition
Polished with traces of palm oil offerings that resemble perspiration in hot weather. Old brown honey patina. Around the waist damaged remains of a snakes loincloth .
