Marka N'tomo mask covered with sheets of embossed brass, three brass pendants to the front of the face ending with red fibers, a crest of six brass forehead horns to the top of the head symbolizing " The level of knowledge of nature" (Diakonoff). Marka masks are made for the rites of passage practiced by the N'tomo society in Mali, West Africa. Unlike most masks used by the Bamana, these are covered with metal sheeting decorated in repousse. Provenance: Philip Budrose collection, New England, USA. Old collection number painted inside in red paint (783). H= 35cm
