Imposing figure from the Congo's Songye group. Fine black oily patina, with a magical charge and extensive signs of use and rubbing with palm oil as offerings. Oxidised copper nails to the eyes, and one on the belly. Animal horn "containing the charge" to the apex of the head, and copper bracelet on the arm. Belande style. These charged figures are named Nkisi (singular) or Mankisi (plural), and were used to protect individuals (when small) and communities (when big). The Belande region is south of the Songye territory in Congo. According to Patric Claes this figure dates from the 1920's. Provenance: Patric Claes, the Van Dooren collection. H= 27cm incl. horn.
