Southern Tanzania Masasi mask

Lot 0038
A rare and expressive Southern Tanzanian mask, most probably from the Masasi tribe that lives on the banks of the Rovuma River. This mask was used by the Omufumu ("healer" in the Kihaya language) who uses herbs and spiritual power to diagnose and cure illnesses. Acting as spirit mediums, the masks are used to represent Wazee ("ancestors" or "old ones" ) and are believed to "come in to the omufumu's head" and speak through him or her.
