A Bacongo figurative horse-hair fly whisk from the Carlo Bold collection. Custom made stand. The Kongo empire was one of the most dominant and renowned indigenous powers of the whole of precolonial Africa, giving rise to a formidable martial force, a complex hierarchical system and some of the most refined arts ever produced on the continent. Flywhisks were status markers for aristocrats, and court members would compete for the most refined exemplars. H= 43 cm
