A big Senufo seated maternity figure. Fine sacrificial patina, with some restoration. Pombibele are related to the Poro secret society, are held by young initiates during funeral ceremonies, and represent ancestral spirits. Pombibele are also used to tamp down the grave earth after a funeral to keep the dead from bothering the living. The statue was collected in situ before 1972 by Fred Ten Houte , Groningen, The Netherlands, and then entered the collection of painter Jean Nies until 1994. It was in the Sanne Nies Salon collection from 1994-2018. H= 82cm
Good Condition, remains of offerings. Base is inscribed with white paint, providing Fred Ten Houte original collection accession number (TH833; see pictures).
