Lot 0044
Notable features on these masks include half-moon shaped eyes, rounded foreheads, finely sculpted noses and mouths, and scarifications on the cheeks. The coiffures and headdress are delicately sculpted and elaborate. This is a very fine example. The Guro people of Ivory Coast have lived around the Bandama River Valley since the second half of the 18th century. This Guro mask represents Gu, the wife of the supernatural spirit named Zamble. Gu is depicted as being elegant, graceful, serene, and beautiful. She is part of the Gye society, and intervenes in the resolution of issues among tribes, as well as social and political conflicts. She tracks down troublemakers and sorcerers, and attends funerals, yet also has a lighter side in which she dances and entertains. H=25cm
