These posts were usually kept in Sepik and Abelam initiation houses, and represent ancestors and other spirits. They were used in ceremonial festivities designed to encourage fruitful harvests of the giant yam, which was evidently a major concern among PNG populations: during the Yam festivals all sexual activity was prohibited. The very strong facial expression with bulbous eyes, a square mouth with sharp teeth, a T-bone nose and a triangular beard are all somewhat reminiscent of Jean-Michel Basquiat's paintings, but are classic markers of Sepik/Abelam artworks. Wood with multicolored ochre, white and dark brown pigments, metal nails. Provenance: Old Dutch collection, De Zwaan, Amsterdam. H=75CM.

Reasonable condition, lower part is damaged.
