Access to ceremonial houses is restricted to initiated men in most Papuan societies, including the Meno, a small group living in the hills the Sepik River in northeast New Guinea. Their ceremonial houses have no walls, and instead consist of a huge, steeply pitched roof, which extends nearly to the ground and is supported by a series of massive posts and beams. The sides are left open except when rituals are being held inside. A finial, carved with images of mythical beings, projects from each gable.Prov: Arend De Grave 1960s-Ulrich Kortmann H= 79cm
