The rifle features a heavy, octagonal, rifled barrel with a dovetailed silver front sight and an iron rear sight mounted on a brass block. There is a brass band about 1-1/2" in front of the breech, which is decorated with stiff leaf engraving. There is also a shaped brass plaque inlaid on the top flat inscribed "P * Young * Easton". the flat lockplate has a rounded tail and is marked in the center "C. BIRD / & CO. / PHILADA / WARRANTED". There are silver escutcheons engraved with borders on each side around the brass barrel keys. There is also a pierced and engraved silver geometric design inlaid above the relief cheekpiece on the left side, as well as a small silver cruciform wrist escutcheon. The large and elaborate brass patchbox covers almost the entire buttstock on the right side. The patchbox has two finials and is profusely engraved with foliate motifs, stars, and folk art designs. Patchbox is two pieces with the lid completely enclosed. The convex button is located on the toeplate which has two piercings and extends all the way to the trigger guard. Engraved with repeating foliate designs. On the left side of the butt, below the cheekpiece, there is a large brass inlay with foliate engraved designs and an integral ferrule for a touch hole pick. The full sideplate has an engraved border of repeating leaf designs. The ramrod entry ferrule has an integral wearplate extending all the way to the trigger floorplate and is engraved with foliate motifs and other designs. The brass nosecap shows a continuation of the double line decoration along the forend and is also engraved with stiff leaf designs. The rifle has double set triggers. Full length Roman nose buttstock of partially figured maple. Complete with original brass tipped ramrod. CONDITION: The rifle was shortened during its period of use. Barrel retains a light brown patina with clear signature, some corrosion near touch hole at breech. The lock has been crudely reconverted to flint. Brass retains a mostly polished surface with some scattered denting, wear, and marks from use. The rearmost barrel key escutcheon on the left side is absent. The stock has been cleaned and refinished but shows some traces of dark original finish. A very elaborate, signed Peter Young rifle.
