Extraordinary Chinese 20th Century Republic Period, Set of Four rectangle framed porcelain painting plaques. Chinese porcelain paintings of four panel framed in vertical rectangular shaped plaques. Each panel hand painted depicted waterside mountainous landscape, peaceful Lishui water, sampan boat, small pavilion, among rockwork hill, various shady tree, amidst a salubrious garden landscape, interspersed with fresh foliage and flowers blooms in black-brown fine color. Calligraphy Chinese lettering inscriptions poems on the upper left, followed with artist's signature and iron-red seals on each panel. Elegancy come with wide hardwood framed and brass loop mounting. Many mountains in China are sacred, some to Daoist's, some to Buddhists and some to both. In folk religion each mountain has its own deity associated with it. The pictogram character for mountain sea represent an all encompassing phrase for the whole world shan hai. Mountains represent the yang element in the landscape and as such connect to the governing yang element in China the Emperor. Mountain is one of the eight trigrams in Feng Shui and Yi Jing. Of these Taishan is considered the most important and stones from the mountain were often placed in towns across China as a lucky charm. And Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages. The entirety is encased in amazing relief carving which gives this box a captivating appearance.
