Circa early 18th cent., Spanish Colonial, oil on canvas in gilt wood frame, Annunciation of the Virgin. God the Father, the dove of the Holy Ghost and a host of angels (three of whom play musical instruments) float above Mary and the Archangel Gabriel. The lily, the traditional symbol of the Mary's purity, are represented in the flowering branch in Gabriel's arm and in the vase on the table, 41 in. x 37 in.


Condition: frame in overall good condition with wear and chips to surface and larger losses at two corners; canvas mounted on strainer, one quarter inch tear in canvas at center, two canvas repairs apparent from patches on reverse of canvas, one just below the center hairline of San Antonio and one underneath the raised arm of Christ child, 3/4 inch abrasion to the right of San Antonio's head; possible repair of surface paint around the left hand of the donor.
