Cal. 58. NSN. Standard configuration w/ 40" bbl., flat bands, Maynard tape device built into lock w/ hinged cover having eagle, "US / SPRINGFIELD" & "1859". This was the most advanced rifle musket in the U.S. arsenals at the time of the Civil War. CONDITION: good overall. Metal is a mix of gray patinas w/ pitting. Lock markings discernable as is eagle on door. Door catch is not functional. "VP" eagle proof in bbl. is discernable, though no bbl. date. Missing rear sight. Stock has been sanded. No visible cartouche. Mechanics of lock are fine w/ exception of Maynard device; cap arm is broken. Bbl. has no discernable rifling & appears smooth & pitted. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of Ronald A.
