Lot 0153
This is an exceptional pair of 19th Century Lakota Sioux Native American Indian fully top beaded moccasins. Provenance: These moccasins were found to be authentic original 19th Century examples from the experts at Heritage Auctions and are from a large American Indian beaded moccasin collection in Laurel, Montana. The set shows an expert craftsmanship with parfleche rawhide hard soles which are sinew sewn to the tops which are handmade from Indian tanned hide that is completely adorned with 1870-1880’s period correct glass trade cen seed and petit trade beads. The beadwork, which is also sinew sewn a true attribute to the circa 1880’s authentic age of this set, shows a nice traditional Sioux pattern with a Buffalo track symbol down the center in a medium blue with chalk white background with stepped diamond like symbols and four rung crosses like symbols in medium green, red white heart, faceted brass metal beads, and more medium blue. Each moccasin shows an excellent bifurcated (forked) tongue which is finely and artfully accented by petit beadwork in a linear pattern with colors such as chalk white, red white hearts, cobalt, medium green, and semi-transparent sky padre blue. Bifurcated tongues are truly an attribute of early moccasins from the 19th Century and truly add an artist appeal to the set. The top edge of the medium height ankle shows a cotton trade clothe piped border. The moccasins are nice large to medium size men’s warrior moccasins from the late Indian Wars era and are very well preserved showing little to no bead loss with fine hide. The back of one of the moccasins shows four strands of hand-cut Indian tanned hide fringe, not seen on the other moccasin but truly a fine addition. Provenance: The set was found to be an authentic 19th Century Sioux example from the experts at Heritage Auctions in 2018 and is from a large moccasin collection in Laurel, Montana. This comes with the Heritage auction catalog including the items listing. The lot also shows the two images from Heritage’s listing. Each moccasin measures 11.5”L by 4”H by 4 3/8”W.
