Die Lubecker Bibel / The Lubeck Bible: 45 Woodcuts from 1494, by Max Jakob Friedlander; Published by Reinhard Piper & Co., Munich, 1923; 49 folio pages (98 pages). The book is based on woodcuts produced by a Flemish printmaker known as the 'Master of the Lubeck Bible', who designed them for a Bible printed in Lubeck in 1494. Original illustrated & embossed cover & all pages mint and complete, tightly bound: the cover has side-splits along the spine and the top layer is brittle along those edges. Some handwritten notations in pencil on the inside covers. Friedlander (1867-1958) was a German-Jewish museum curator and art historian, deputy director of the Paintings Department of the Berlin State Museums, eventually attaining the rank and title of 'geheimrat' (privy councillor - the highest advising officials at the Imperial, royal or princely courts) under the German Empire. Retiring in 1933 in time of the rise of the Nazi regime, he worked as a private expertiser for German and foreign art dealers, enjoying the protection of Nazi Reichmarshall Hermann Goering whose art collection he helped advise. Friedlander emigrated to Amsterdam in 1939, and after the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II, an erroneous arrest was reversed through intervention of the Nazi art dealer Karl Haberstock (1878-1956) who was also working for Goering.
