Palestine/Yishuv: 'Haga' ('Haganah Avirit') Air Defence helmet for the city of Ramat Gan, circa. 1940's; produced by Pleese Ltd. of Holon. The helmet is contructed of a single sheet of metal painted in blue-green and bears a red Star of David within a white circle, with the Hebrew initials (clockwise) "M" "M" "R" "G" in each of the four corners around the Star - probably meaning "Emergency Center [Merkaz Miyun] Ramat Gan"; below the device is the legend "Ha.G.A. Ramat Gan" in stylized letters. The lining is of the standard type supplied by Pleese: green leather lined crown with padded base covered in fabric, and leather chin straps bearing in the name of the firm in Hebrew on one strap and in English on the other, and held in place by split-rivetted lugs. The helmet complete, with sturdy liner, in near-perfect mint condition - a textbook example of a domestically produced Pleese helmet. The body known by its initials as 'Haga' was an organized entity with membership cards, originally known as 'Hagana Avirit' (civil air defence) and in more recent years as 'Hitgonnenut Ezrachit' (Civil Defence). This helmet belonged to the civil air defence body which existed during World War II and the 1947-49 War of Independence, and can be seen in use in period photographs of Palestine during the Second World War. The red Star of David would suggest that the specific role of the wearer of this helmet was as that of the 'Red Magen David Adom' - first aid and emergency treatment.
