**Originally Listed At $500**

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A cast iron brand, with a long, pointed handle, and an abstract symbol made of folded iron on one end. Brands are rarely found at Roman archaeological sites, likely because iron was valuable and would be repurposed rather than discarded. The Romans branded cattle, horses, and, in Africa, camels. It is not clear if Romans branded humans, either prisoners or slaves (the textual sources are ambiguous about whether they were branded or tattooed, because of the use of the Latin word "stigma"), so this was almost certainly used on livestock. Size: 1.4" W x 9.2" H (3.6 cm x 23.4 cm)

Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection
