Lot 0149
**Originally Listed At $600**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of elegant gold wire earrings, each 95% gold (equivalent to 22K+), curved into a teardrop form and an open hook with a bauble at its tip for placement through the earlobe. A delicate granulated disc is set into one side of each teardrop, demarcating a thinner part of the wire that is strung with a single blue-green glass bead that can move freely along the thin part of the wire. Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit. Size of one: 0.85" H (2.2 cm); 95% gold (equivalent to 22K+); total weight of both: 2 g

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
