Lot 0487
**Originally Listed At $800**

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A hand-carved wooden totem figure standing atop broad feet and bent legs while holding an abstract amphibian against the broad chest. The semicircular head boasts incised almond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, deep nasolabial folds flanking pursed lips, and a broad forehead, all beneath a cylindrical hat inlaid with four white-and-purple spondylus shell fragments. Wooden figures from ancient Peru are extremely scarce due to the decomposition of wood over time. This is an exceedingly rare example! Size: 1.1" W x 4.25" H (2.8 cm x 10.8 cm).

Provenance: private Probst collection, Monterey, California, USA, acquired in the mid-1970s to mid-1990s
