Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 CE. A nicely preserved sewing basket, of woven reeds with two internal chambers separated by a short partition, filled with original contents. Among the contents are a textile coca bag; a braided reed headband; 2 textile tassels with thick handles; 2 woven textile panels; 1 bunch of woven thread; 1 bunch of loose thread; 1 bunch of loose textile, reed, and leather strips; 1 gourd rattle with a wooden handle; 2 wooden thread separators; 1 stone knife point attached to a wooden handle; 23 wooden needles; 9 wooden needles with pottery or stone spindle whorls; 2 wooden needles with wooden spools; 11 wooden needles with spools of thread; 7 wooden needles with thread and pottery spindle whorls; 16 loose pottery spindle whorls; and 1 loose copper spindle whorl. Size (basket): 11.5" L x 16" W x 7.75" H (29.2 cm x 40.6 cm x 19.7 cm).
