**Originally Listed At $700**

West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi but with Baoule influence, ca. 1920s CE. A carved wooden portrait mask with interesting features. The face has a huge headdress or coiffure - probably meant to be a wig - with deeply incised lines forming a dramatic bulge that towers over the long face. Bulbous jowls hang down over a small chin, while the thin nose broadens abruptly into wide line at the nostrils. The eyes are large, carved with heavy outlines. Based on its style, this mask was likely carved by Lunkena Pale, a student of the Lobi carver Sikire Kambire. This was carved to be hung on the walls of colonial visitors, commissioned by Colonial Administrator Henri Labouret. Size: 3.75" W x 8.5" H (9.5 cm x 21.6 cm); 9.75" H (24.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired over the last twenty years; ex Mathias Komor, New York, USA
