Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bakongo peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely-carved wooden figure of a male drummer crouching atop an integral ovoid plinth with a large idiophone held between his legs. He leans forward and holds both hands atop the drum head as if he's creating a rhythmic beat. A thick neck supports the large head which boasts a stylized visage of almond-shaped eyes, a wide, aquiline nose, full lips, and a slender beard, all beneath heavy brows and a conical helmet. Several areas along the body and head present vibrant vermilion pigment, and lustrous brown patina covers the unpainted areas. A fabulous figural example from Central Africa! Condition

Small losses to base and ears, with repairs to left leg and several areas of verso. Minor nicks and abrasions to legs, arms, body, and head, with a few stable hairline fissures, and fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits as well as nice traces of pigmentation and brown patina throughout.
