Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. 1920s CE. A massive, hand-carved, wooden canoe oar with an openwork decorative motif of two intertwined sea birds at the top. The handle broadens into an integrated oar with a thick ridge down its face and two points on its end. The rugged terrain of Papua New Guinea means that the easiest form of travel for its native indigenous inhabitants is via dugout canoe, especially in the region around the long inland Sepik River. Canoes were highly decorated with symbols of clans and emblems for safety, speed, and success. Size: 6.75" W x 92" H (17.1 cm x 233.7 cm); 96" H (243.8 cm) on included custom stand.
