Western Europe, England, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine gathering of three wheel-thrown brownware pottery pitchers which were fired at a relatively-high temperature. Each vessel has an apple-shaped body resting upon a flat base, a rounded shoulder with a lightly-grooved neck line, a cylindrical neck with a lightly-pinched pouring spout, and a trifurcated handle arching between the neck and shoulder, all covered in a salt-based glaze which imparts a deep-orange hue. The vessels are decorated with intricate pottery appliques depicting humans in relaxed poses, packs of dogs running along the lower body, trees, and even a windmill. The shoulder of each pitcher is adorned with impressed right-angle motifs which almost mimic the style of Greek meander and imbue the vessels with an elegant presentation. Size of largest: 5.5" W x 6.5" H (14 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection
