Berkeley Williams (also Berkeley Williams Jr., American, 1904-1976), oil on canvas painting of countryside of southern France, signed by artist in red at the bottom left. A breathtaking landscape painting of the countryside of southern France, featuring a quaint vernacular, red-roofed building surrounded by lush trees, terraced lands, and lofty mountains in the distance. Williams' technique is very strong - replete with wonderful linear as well as atmospheric perspective. A native of Richmond, Virginia, Williams studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts prior to sojourning in France for 18 months. Upon returning to the states, his paintings received rave reviews. An article written two years later declared: "Mr. Williams has reached the point where he is convincing in everything he does." Most recently, Berkeley Williams' "Portrait in Green" (1932) sold at Leland Little, 22 September 2018 with a hammer of $2400. Another landscape painting by Williams entitled, "Cagnes-Sur-Mer, Epicerie Nicolay" sold at Leland Little, 11 March 2016 hammering at $1000.

Provenance: private Palm Desert, California, USA collection; acquired by descent from Maurice (Red) Silverstein who was President of MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios) International and Betty Silverstein, known as Betty Bryant, who was a successful actress in Australia prior to marrying Red. Always very active socially in New York City, the couple knew many famous artists, writers, and actors in the 1950's - 1970's.
