Description: M. Grieve & Co., hand carved frame. Purchased in 1950 from Knoedler & Co., Inc., NYC., a letter accompanies this from Walter J. Leary of Knoedler. This painting is illustrated in "Mary Cassatt: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Oils, Pastels, Watercolors and Drawings," by Adelyn Dohme Breeskin, Washington, D. C., Smithsonian Institution Press, 1970, Nol 453 on Page 176. According to the Knoedler & Co. invoice, this painting had been in the collection of M. Robert Nerillon, French Consul at Milan in 1939, Signore Scopinovitch, Milan and M. Jacques Ruel, Paris. A 1980 letter from a dealer asking to purchase the painting Dr. Chapman purchased some 30 years earlier was met with the response, "Living with it gives us entirely too much pleasure to have it depart." Mrs. Breeskin gave this painting its title based on similar images. The last time this painting was exhibited was in the 1970 Smithsonian Exhibition on Mary Cassatt. In a letter from Mrs. Adelyn Breeskin, the author dates this as circa 1904. The Control Number at the Art Inventory Catalogue is IAP 80170453.
