Lot 2013

This lot consists of an unframed oil painting on stretched canvas, done in the light-filled, Impressionistic style of Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). "Claude Monet" is hand written at lower right. Awash in gorgeous tones of blue and white, this lustrous image depicts a harbor scene on a bright and cheerful day. A woman stands at the water's edge with a small child, surveying the shimmering waters below. Done in the vibrant, painterly style for which Claude Monet is so well known. A gorgeous highlight to any collector's gallery. Overall dimensions are approximately 12" x 18".

Reverse side of piece features an affixed paper label, which reads, "Oscar-Claude Monet. 1840-1926." Label also features a partial stamp which reads, "Collection Simon. 29 Rue d'Astor [?]. Paris."

Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French painter, founding member of the Impressionist art movement, and a master of capturing light and movement within paintings. Monet was not only influenced by Japanese design sensibilities, but he held a deep-rooted artistic philosophy about expressing one's perceptions of nature as clearly and directly as possible. His work perfectly exemplifies this doctrine, with a lightness and a charm that can only be associated with the artist himself.
