Statement on DIRTY SPONGE MAP CARTOGRAPHY
The used sponge maps come out of my interest in collecting various studio by-products and reconfiguring them into new forms. The cartographic iconography is derived from recognizable geographies. The dirty, moldy and deteriorated sponge material making up this series metaphorically expresses environmental traumas to the landscape, from man-made pollution (oil spills, toxic dumping, carbon output) to natural disasters (flooding, earthquakes, soil erosion, etc.).
