Lot 0007

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "America's Cup Champion Magic". Oil on masonite. Signed lower right. A keel schooner owned by Franklin Osgood, Magic was designed in 1857 by T. Byrely and Son of Philadelphia. She was rebuilt by David Carll of City Island, New York, a year before the America's Cup Race. Magic had an overall length of 84 feet and a waterline length of 79 feet. She lived to the ripe old age of 69 and saw a colorful career that included, aside from the glory of the America's Cup Race, a stint as a dispatch runner during the Spanish-American War, fishing for sponges in the Gulf of Mexico, being sold for debt and serving as a supply boat and storage hulk. Thus, she ran the gamut from aristocrat to drudge. In October 1926, the Magic sank during a hurricane in Key West, Florida.

Size: 25 x 26 in.
