World War One, US Army Signal Corps Air Service tunic. Wool construction with stand up collar, four-pocket, five-button front closure and silk lined interior. Insignia includes: Sleeve rank and bullion overseas stripes, ribbon bar and bullion flight wings. Tunic accompanied by breeches. Uniform is well worn with period repairs, areas of scattered wear, losses and staining. Approximately size 36R. (2pc) WW1 US Aviator dog tags on lanyard, reads "Lt. WALTER J. HIGGINS ASA USA", reverse, "CHICAGO ILLINOIS". Tags accompanied by letter sent by John J. Smith, a veteran of the 138th Aero Squadron to Dr. Walter Powell on Feb. 9, 1983 providing background on Higgins and another aviator of interest to Dr. Powell. Smith noted that Lt. Walter Jefferson Higgins was a native of Chicago, learned to fly at Love Field in Dallas, Texas, and was commissioned 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Air Service in October 1918.
