Description

After George Earl (1824-1908, English), "A Field Trial Meet," 20th c., oil on canvas, presented in a wide cove molded frame, H.- 50 1/2 in., W.- 75 in.

Condition

Condition consistent with age. Some scattered hairs are seen adhered to the canvas, most noticeably in the lower left corner and along the right side. A ½ inch white mark is seen in the lower right corner. Paint varies in thickness throughout (canvas showing in the sky). No signature or inscriptions visible; 3 abrasions in proper right on one of the two gentlemen in the beginning of the scene. Evidence of in-painting in sky, a 1 1/8 in diameter gray patch – evidence of repair work done (possibly by the artist) on proper right side, upper corner, approximately 5 inches from edge of canvas. Gold leaf & gesso frame. An intriguing scene and handsome example. ______________________________________________________________________________ ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS IS.” NO STATEMENT REGARDING CONDITION OF ANY ITEM, WHETHER IT IS MADE ORALLY AT THE AUCTION OR ANY OTHER TIME, OR IN WRITING IN THE CATALOGUE OR ELSEWHERE, SHALL BE DEEMED TO BE A WARRANTY, REPRESENTATION, OR ASSUMPTION OF LIABILITY.
