Description

NSN. Barrel length 33" . Caliber .58. Dated 1865. Manufactured in Georgia for an order placed by the state of Alabama. This rifle is based on the Model 1841 that features all brass furniture. The lock is stamped ALA and dated 1865. The forward section is stamped Dickson & Nelson Co. CS. The barrel was finished in the white is now a mottled gray patina mix. There are two brass barrel bands with nose cap. Sling swivel attached to front band and trigger guard. Stock is full length walnut and in all original excellent condition with a few minor stress cracks and usual mars. Rifle still sports a period steel rod. There are no other factory stamps aside from lock. Bore exhibits sharp rifling with usual residue. The Dickson & Nelson company started in Alabama before moving to Georgia. During the war, the plant moved three times within the state. It is estimated that they built approximately 3000 rifles for the Alabama militia , most of which were made in 1864 & 1865. This is one of the finest known, all original examples of an actual CS marked and built Civil War rifle from this company. (A)
