Description

Offered is a set of Colt Model 1878 Double Action revolvers. Both have London barrel address, English silver plated, fire blue hammer back, trigger an screws, checkered birds head rosewood grips and both have lanyards removed. Aside from minor handling marks, guns show no cylinder face burn nor any signs of having been fired and retain virtually all of the silver plating, near mint grips and almost all the fire blue on small parts. Cylinder has British proofs. Both have 5 1/2" barrels and are chambered for the largest diameter cartridge made for this model, the .476 Eley. Both have near mint bores and actions. One is serial #7973 and was made in 1882. The other is serial #15555 and was made 1885. This revolver appears in the copy of Army & Navy sales ledger as sold in England to Caton Jones, Sup FW on Sept 9, 1885 with no details on guns finish. How they ended up together as a pair and plated while in England is a mystery. The wood case they come in is contemporary. Being sold as pair but can easily be split as each is outstanding in its own right. (A)
