Declaration Signer Carter Braxton Superb DS Witnessed by Henry Clay
Braxton, Carter. Rare Partly Printed Document Signed, one page, Virginia, February 25, 1794, 6.5" x 8". Also signed by Henry Clay. In fine condition.
"Know all Men by these Presents, that we Carter Braxton and Henry Banks are held and firmly bound unto Thomas Prosser Gentleman, Sheriff of Henrico County, in the just and full Sum of One hundred and Sixty pounds …" Of particular interest, this legal document is also signed by 16-year-old Henry Clay: "Signed sealed and delivered in presence of … Henry Clay"
A great association between two prominent actors of American history, including a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Braxton's signature is quite rare, and this is one of the earliest known signatures of Henry Clay.
