Garfield Lucretia

Lucretia Garfield Signature, PSA Encapsulated & Graded Minted 9!

A calling card signed by former First Lady Lucretia Garfield (1832-1918), signed by her as "Lucretia R. Garfield" at top. Also inscribed in her hand, "Mentor O. / Aug. 1884". PSA graded Mint 9. A few stray pencil inscriptions and light isolated darkening in the lower right corner. Some light stains verso. Else near fine. The card measures 4.125" x 2.375" while the slab measures 7.25" x 4.25".

Lucretia Garfield was married to 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield (1831-1881) for 23 years. Garfield and "Crete", as the president lovingly called his wife, shared many intellectual and social interests and had seven children.

After President Garfield's assassination and death in September 1881, Lucretia returned to Lawnfield, their Eastlake style residence in Mentor, Ohio, where she began curating her husband's papers. Now called the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, the home became the repository of the first real presidential library.
