Signed Original Pug Dog Oil Painting on Board by John Henry Dolph (American, 1835–1903) circa 1880's to 1890's who exhibited in the National Academy from 1864 until his death in 1903. John Henry Dolph is best known as a painter of domestic animals and farm scenes, especially cats, and in 1894 was described as the "leading cat painter in America" by Quarterly Illustrator. Born in 1835 in New York, he did do portraiture and landscapes in Ohio from 1857 to 1861. Returning to New York in 1872, he found his niche in painting cats and dogs.
