Lot 0004

In the past 200+ years few artists have been able to depict the subtleties of living birds better than Jacques Barraband. His painstaking attention to detail and anatomical knowledge of his subject made him the best ornithological artist of his time. No other artist equaled his mastery in the rendering of feathers, in evoking their fragility, stiffness or incredible lightness. More importantly, he was able to also define the charming personality of each individual bird, and that's the sign of a true artist. Francois Levaillant was able to capture the essence of Barraband's superb paintings through the inspired engravings of Langlois who also added hand-colored nuances to each plate. La Perruche Phigy is plate no. 64 in Levaillant's brilliant "Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets," considered one of the truly great bird books, with some of the most lively and colorful bird illustrations ever created. The meticulous engravings in Levaillant's publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Using an exotic printing process known as "a la poupee," each plate was delicately inked with multiple areas of color in order to make a multi-color impression. Today the plates from Levaillant's great volumes are quite scarce and often range in the thousands of dollars each. La Perruche Phigy is one of the actual plates from the original quarto edition; it has survived since its 1801-05 creation in fine condition. 4.5 x 9 (image) on 10 x 13.25 sheet.
