**First Time At Auction**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. Hand-painted on heavy gauge tin, a lovely retablo featuring the Virgin Mary as "Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria" and set in a finely-aged wooden frame. The crowned Mary stands with a red-and-blue robe, holes a lit candle in one hand, and supports the Christ Child in her other arm. She is shown in front of an "anima sola," or a lonesome departed ancestral soul, surrounded by the flames of purgatory while they await their judgment. Size (retablo): 5.4" W x 8.625" H (13.7 cm x 21.9 cm); (frame): 7.6" W x 10.4" H (19.3 cm x 26.4 cm).

Provenance: private Honolulu, Hawaii, USA collection

Slight bending to overall form of retablo, with light fading to original pigmentation, and encrustations and loosening to wooden frame slats, otherwise intact and very good. Nice age-commensurate patina to retablo and wooden frame. Mounted with metal loop screws and wire on verso for mounting.
