Lot 572 View Catalog
very finely carved wood image of a monk in typical brown robe that is nicely detailed with realistic folds in the back and painted cincture hanging in front; when the upper torso is removed the lower section of the figure opens up to reveal 3 sections of a church interior in vibrant colors - the larger section presents an alter with crucifix and candles in a windowed apse - before the alter stands a priest (has serious paint loss); the monk's tonsured head is finely rendered (some paint chipping to hair and face); interior paint suggest Erzgebirge origin circa 1840
Size: 5.5" t.
