Colonial Massachusetts Military Document, Dummer's War, 1722. A rare framed commission issued by "Samuel Shute, Esqr; Captain General and Governor in Chief, in and over His Majesty's Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New England, etc. To Ezra Whitmarsh, Gent. as Ensign in the Foot Company of the Town of Weymouth, John Hunt, Captain, and in the Third Regiment of Militia. . ." The commission is signed by Royal Governor Samuel Shute and Secretary G. Willard on July 2, 1722. Ezra Whitmarsh (1670-1754) was a prominent resident of Weymouth and served during the conflict against the French and Abenaki in present day Maine in what came to be called "Father Rale's War" or "Dummer's War." The parchment document is in an older wooden frame measuring 14" x 17 3/4" Label on rear of frame for "N. Shore & Co. Picture Frames, Mouldings and Mirrors--20 Beach Street, Boston--Est. 1896."
