Lot 0709 Details

Description
A great example of an early "removable" globe railroad lantern. No patents or maker markings on the frame. What a distinct style with odd lid latch and hinge, small skirt, wire wrap joints. The frame never had any globe retaining top components, it's just a friction fit. This is an early frame.

The globe is a great 6" barrel with ERIE cast without a panel across the middle in block lettering. Some collectors are surprised to learn the earliest cast globes have block and not serif lettering. It's clear and very smooth. A GREAT globe!

The Erie Railway Company is almost the earliest name for the Erie Railroad. It had this name from 1861-1878. Prior to this it was the New York & Erie. After this name it was the New Lake Erie & Western. Later the Erie Railroad. A fine piece of railroad history. This lantern is from the collection of advanced collector and long time New York resident Dave Haakeester.
